Jet Engine Basic Component - High Pressure Turbine Blade (Air Cooling Type) The higher the temperature at which air enters the turbine, the better the engine's performance and efficiency will be. However, there is a limit to how high the metal used in the turbine section can withstand heat. Modern engines have inlet temperatures that far exceed the melting point of most metals. The nozzles and blades in the high-pressure turbine area are particularly vulnerable to overheating. To mitigate this issue, engineers use various cooling technologies to create complex structures within these components. A model has been created to illustrate the structure and manufacturing process used in modern high-pressure turbine blades. While the actual blade is more intricate and employs additional manufacturing techniques, the model provides a general understanding of how they are made. The following sections explain the cooling system and printed models included in this package: Cooling Structure Explained by This Model Internal Cooling: Convection, Impingement, Turbulator Rib, Pedestal, Trailing Edge Ejection Outer Cooling: Film Cooling Printed Models (see photo) a.
