This is an age-old, crude instrument, uncovered in Khotyn district, Ukraine. Its striking shape and composition (flint) convince me that this is a stone tool of the Acheulean variety. Acheulean refers to a distinct archaeological tradition of stone tools, which thrived from 1.5 million to 200,000 years ago. For context, modern humans first emerged approximately 200,000 years ago. The earliest user of Acheulean technology was Homo ergaster, who first appeared about 1.8 million years ago. The hand-axe underwent a precise scan using a NextEngine 3D laser scanner.
