5 Speed Gear Knob
thingiverse
I designed a Gear Knob for my R34 Skyline, and it's quite Basic but still effective. If you're skilled at mods in CAD, I've included the original files so you can add logos or other designs as you like. Please give credit if you decide to sell this design. To improve the bottom piece's appearance, consider adding a few holes for neodymium magnets; this will allow it to self-attach and be easy to remove. I recently updated the original design for faster prints. For the lower part, use 100% infill and 3 perimeters when printing. The Gearstick Knob should be printed with 80% infill and 5 perimeters. You'll need supports for the hex nut cutout on the knob, as well as a brim of 30 perimeters with a zero offset to ensure it stays stuck in place while printing. Make sure your bed is set at 60 degrees to prevent the bottom from melting. The knob prints well at 0.2mm layers throughout, but for optimal results, start by printing the first half at 0.2mm layers up to 22mm high, then switch to 0.12mm layers until you reach 42mm high, and finally use 0.08mm layers to finish. This process should take around 8-10 hours if your printer is set to 50-60mm per second. The lower part has a 12mm hole that can be adjusted according to your needs. The 1mm Hex nut cutout may require supports, but it's not necessary to have them. No brim is required for the lower piece. In use, the knob feels great and provides excellent control during gear changes due to its textured top surface, which is slightly rougher than the bottom. This design reduced my total gear-stick height by about an inch, giving me a short shifter feel. The 9mm hole in the base of the knob allows for threading a 10mm shaft, and even without a matching nut, it should still hold securely if you simply thread it onto the shaft. If you have a suitable nut, your gear stick shaft will be guaranteed a solid fit. The nut cutout measures 14mm from hex corner to opposite corner; adjust this as needed in 123D Design. The files are included for your convenience.
