A donor sought assistance with a decorative tealight holder. Initially, he proposed creating a simple square lantern, but I added a CNC-inspired twist to the project when we transitioned to a five-sided design. We then collaborated on a concept that incorporated small (40 mm diameter) tealights and larger ones (59 mm). A prototype featured an interchangeable component, which led us to develop an adapter and ultimately simplify the design to its final stage. The upper section can be easily lifted to insert and light the candle. The side panel design is highly interchangeable. I envisioned bubble or leaf patterns similar to those found on my trivets, as well as stars, hearts, or other geometric shapes that might appeal to users. My build was completed using a desktop CNC machine from Stepcraft with a 1.2 mm spiral-toothed flute. The horizontal components were fabricated from 6 mm Baltic birch plywood, while the panels were made from 4 mm pine. Due to the thinness of the side panels, I employed a chamfer on a disc sander to prevent damage during assembly. The parts assembled without any adhesive. A coat of oil enhanced the wood's natural structure and color. A word of caution regarding the use of fine cutters on pine: the milling dust causes the wood resin to gum up, making it extremely challenging to clean afterward.
