I'm absolutely thrilled to finally get this design right, and it's a moment I've been anticipating for what feels like an eternity. The inspiration for this project dates back to my early days of 3D design and printing when I first stumbled upon a fascinating mechanical box on Thingiverse that caught my attention. This ingenious creation, known as the Iris Box, is designed around twisting a surrounding ring which causes the top to open and close like an iris. From the moment I laid eyes on it, I was hooked, determined to create one of my own despite being the creative type in a family of engineers. It took years for me to work out how to bring this design to life by drawing it myself. That changed recently when I finally managed to find the time to sit down and concentrate, focusing all my efforts on cracking this problem once and for all. After numerous attempts over nearly four years, it was well worth it in the end - the design now works seamlessly! With that major hurdle out of the way, I'm excited to share it with you so you can replicate it too. The Iris Box consists of a smooth pot-shaped base which features an attached iris mechanism that has been designed with enough space to function properly. To give this beauty an extra wow factor, I've colored the petals differently, providing an attractive finish both when closed and open, creating a unique flower-like effect. Picture it - a futuristic box-inspired flower that might remind you of the Borg Queen's high-tech greenhouse or something even more remarkable. If any parts go missing during assembly, don't worry! I've included multiple mounting pin varieties with both complete pieces and ones that allow you to add a cap if needed for an easier build experience.
