5-Cylinder Radial Engine Model
thingiverse
The initial radial engine, constructed in 1901, significantly impacted aviation history. Italian designer Alessandro Anzani powered the first English Channel flight with a 3-cylinder 12 hp model. During World War II, Pratt & Whitney's massive 28-cylinder 4,300 hp radial engines propelled heavy bombers. Although gas turbines have largely replaced radial engines in aviation, they remain in use for specialized acrobatic aircraft. The 5-Cylinder Radial Engine Model is inspired by the Forest Edwards Radial 5 and based on Robert Sigler's plans, which were adapted to work with desktop 3D printing technology. A video of the engine being cranked by hand can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/bvicarious/8043692271/in/set-72157631666979368, and the project was created by Michael Curry. Detailed instructions are provided in '5 Cylinder Engine Instructions.pdf'. Notably, the big engine in the photographs is a scaled version of all files at 140%.
