5.25" Optical DVD Drive Enclosure
cults3d
Breathe new life into your old internal optical DVD drive by transforming it into a sleek USB external drive with a custom-built enclosure. To get started, you'll need an IDE to USB converter like the one found on eBay at https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SATA-PATA-IDE-Drive-to-USB-2-0-Adapter-Converter-Cable-for-2-5-3-5-Hard-Drive-UK/272139114062. Additionally, you'll require a reliable power supply like the one listed on eBay at https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HDD-POWER-SUPPLY-AC-12V-5V-2A-FOR-HARD-DRIVE-MOLEX-UK/392361649556. Printing the enclosure using a 0.8 nozzle will help speed up the process. To assemble the drive, you'll need six M3x10 countersunk screws to secure the drive and back plate in place. Update: April 24th, 2020 A new addition to the design is an enclosure_test.stl part that prints only the first 10mm of the enclosure. This allows you to test the fit before printing the entire enclosure. If it's too tight or loose, you can compensate by scaling slightly or applying a positive or negative horizontal expansion setting in Cura.
