5.25 Inch PC Drawer
thingiverse
This is a drawer designed specifically for installation in the 5.25" bay located at the front of a PC. A series of small nubs are attached to the back side of the drawer and serve as a locking mechanism that fits snugly into a corresponding slot on the mounting bracket, preventing accidental ejection or tipping when no components are mounted above it. The overall design works remarkably well. Two different types of mounting brackets have been included: "Double" and "Single". The double bracket consists of two separate pieces that require less time to print and utilize fewer resources, whereas the single piece bracket is a more straightforward solution. In most cases, I recommend using the double bracket due to its superior functionality. However, I've also included the single piece bracket as it may prove beneficial in specific situations such as those utilizing a screwless quick-connect system or enclosures that restrict access from only one side. In these instances, you may need to drill out the screw holes slightly larger to accommodate the post or equivalent component used in your setup. It's essential to exercise caution when handling the screws to avoid any potential issues. For optimal results, I suggest utilizing #6-32 UNC screws, which are the standard size commonly employed for securing hard drives. Avoid using finer thread M3 screws typically associated with optical drives, as they may not provide the same level of security and could be more susceptible to stripping when used in relatively thin plastic components. To further enhance the drawer's performance, you can apply a small amount of lubricant to the nubs on the back side of the drawer and the corresponding slots. WD-40 or Superlube work effectively in this regard. UPDATE: June 08, 2020 - I've uploaded revised brackets that address some minor concerns. The old two-piece bracket had been functioning satisfactorily, so there's no need to reprint it if you've already done so. In contrast, the new one-piece bracket exhibits significant improvements. Specifically: * Both bracket types have received additional text to facilitate easier orientation and a reinforced rail that holds the drawer in place, reducing flex and providing greater stability. * The redesigned bottom of the one-piece bracket minimizes the likelihood of the drawer binding or failing to close properly due to warping when tightened. If you appreciate this design, consider showing your appreciation by leaving a tip or posting a make!
