Each hole has a compact cylinder at its base that is slightly smaller than a larger primer but larger than a smaller primer. This allows smaller primer brass to sit elevated above larger primer brass when all the brass pieces are inserted into their respective holes. Looking at the tray from the side, the brass containing small primers will appear raised, making it easy to simply pull them out.
