The .45-70 rifle round, called .45-70 Government, was created at the U.S. Army's Springfield Armory for use with the Springfield Model 1873, known by collectors as the "Trapdoor Springfield." This new cartridge replaced the temporary .50-70 Government round, which had been introduced in 1866, following the American Civil War's conclusion.
