4-dowel template
thingiverse
This is a template designed for joining two pieces of wood with 3/8-inch dowels. There are actually two templates available - one has tabs on both sides that fit over two 2x4's (each three inches wide) and the other features only one tab to be used at the end of any wooden piece. By placing a clamp on each board as a guide, you can then drill through holes with a 3/8-inch bit until the required depth is reached for your specific project. Note that these holes are slightly undersized which might necessitate some plastic removal from the initial attempt but subsequent uses should yield smooth results. These templates were initially created for a bed-building project and they proved extremely effective in aligning pieces seamlessly without any difficulty or misalignment issues arising. I produced this template on a Makerbot Replicator 2 using low-quality settings, complete support material, and an infill density of 30% to achieve the desired stiffness level - though a higher setting can also be applied to further reduce potential wobble when drilling through two wooden pieces simultaneously. If needed, you may opt to drill-through both boards with this template, following the exact procedure from my 5-hole template which can be found here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:673565
