It encompasses 45-65 species of medium to large trees, mostly deciduous with subtropical species being evergreen. The Fraxinus genus covers most of Europe, Asia, and North America.\n\nLeaves are opposite, rarely in whorls of three, and typically pinnately compound or simple in a few species. Seeds known as keys or helicopter seeds are a type of fruit called samara. Most Fraxinus species have male and female flowers on separate plants but sex in ash is expressed as a continuum between males and females with unisexual trees dominating. Ashes may change their sexual function from predominantly male to hermaphrodite towards femaleness with age; if grown ornamentally, ashes can cause litter problems due to seeds if both sexes are present. Rowans or mountain ashes have leaves and buds similar to those of true ashes but belong to the unrelated genus Sorbus in the rose family.
