A low hum from his throat reverberating down into his bones. He focused on the strands, willing more focus into them. A swirling shape began forming inside the intricate pattern between his fingers. He uttered the five syllables quietly, knowing that to do so was a grave offence. If they found out, he would be expelled with great haste and without any chance to appeal. Or worse. Having accomplished the necessary focus, he began widening his arms, stretching the pattern, letting the one shape spread out and multiply into several. Resuming the low hum, he waited. Only a matter of time now until the spirits would claw and bite their way through the swirling mist. But hopefully not all the way through. That was the danger, the reason why this was forbidden. Calling the soul's essence back this far changed them. Not all parts came back, and the parts that did were usually angry. Borrowing small parts of their soul strands was safe and was the foundation on which everything here is built. But he had no use for a Borrowing. Greater ambitions, greater Calling. To fully harness the soul's essence, he would need to hire an unscrupulous weaver or a sartor to weave the soul strands into his robes. Strands that were detectable, if you knew what to look for.
