3rd stage custom rat house
thingiverse
I designed a new home for my two rats on Facebook, where they had previously lived in a mushroom box. This initial box was fine at first but soon became warped and required weighing down with a stone to prevent it from collapsing. I set out to create a more spacious and cozy enclosure that could replace the old one. This is the final stage of the box design, after verifying that everything fits properly. To improve ventilation and encourage their natural foraging behavior, I added holes on both sides for them to stick their noses through while receiving treats. The new box is larger than the mushroom box they previously occupied, which served as a good size reference point. However, it can be easily disassembled for cleaning due to its modular design. The parts fit together in a specific way, making reassembly relatively straightforward despite some initial complexity. This was my first attempt at designing boxes with such interlocking components, and while it may not be perfect, users are free to customize the design as they see fit. There are three stages of this project, each of which can be scaled and customized for optimal use in various spaces.
