3Oz Nickel Weight
thingiverse
To create a counterweight for my Drawbot, I initially attempted designing cantilevered pen holders but faced challenges. However, I learned that a basic pen holder works well with approximately 3 oz of weight hanging off it for a Sharpie. Additionally, while ball bearings work, they are better suited for other purposes. To address the counterweight issue, I considered filling it with sand, but the weight per cubic centimeter turned out to be incorrect on the website I found it on. Fortunately, the design was perfect for a stack of nickels. To assemble the counterweight: 1. Print the designed component. 2. Fill it with nickels (but not up to the top). 3. Screw an M5-10 screw through the hole in the lid and thread a nut onto the back. 4. Apply generous acetone and glue the lid in place. To save money, I searched Amazon for 3 oz fishing weights priced at $7.95 for five, but opted for a cheaper alternative. Once the glue has set, attach a small piece of monofilament to hang it off the pen holder, looping around the screw and hanging over the front. This allows for printing on completely vertical surfaces.
