Nothing much has changed lately, but having a backup plan like this can be really helpful if your software's slicing capabilities aren't up to par. A cylinder is a great example that comes to mind; I've tried various approaches, except for standing it upright, which doesn't count in this case since it often results in something quite useless. You can also apply this technique to many other shapes, making it a versatile tool.
