This interactive Rain Gauge is a key component of the 3DKanjers initiative, aimed at connecting 3D-printed objects to computers for educational purposes. The Gauge was created using TinkerCad and printed on an Ultimaker Original. To transform rainfall into a signal, we incorporated the Tipping Bucket part designed by Kulyk from Thingiverse. The Rain Gauge Funnel was inspired by Anders Oberg's design in Tinkercad. A Makey Makey connects the Gauge to the computer, while the program to measure rainfall is built in Scratch at http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/30414772. Each time the bucket tips, the program receives a signal (spacebar) and calculates the rainfall. The "Calibration" slider allows for adjustments to be made to the measurements. Check out this video to see it in action: We're confident that you can create an even better Rain Gauge design using 3D modeling software and program a more effective project in Scratch. We'd love to see what you come up with if you connect your own 3D printed object to your computer!
