Model for Our Amazing Earth Lesson Plan By Val Matlock Grade Level: 3-5 Subject: Science Time Needed: 45 minutes Objectives: * Students will be able to describe the layers of the Earth. * Students will be able to explain the importance of each layer. * Students will be able to create a model of the Earth's layers. Materials: * Cardboard or foam board * Construction paper * Scissors * Glue * Markers Procedure: 1. Introduction (10 minutes) Introduce the topic of the Earth's layers and ask students if they know what each layer is. 2. Direct Instruction (15 minutes) Explain to students that the Earth has three main layers: the crust, mantle, and core. Use a diagram or model to show students how the layers are arranged. 3. Guided Practice (10 minutes) Give each student a piece of cardboard or foam board and have them cut it into three sections. Have students draw or glue construction paper to represent the different layers. 4. Independent Practice (10 minutes) Have students create their own model of the Earth's layers using various materials such as clay, play dough, or paper mache. 5. Closing (10 minutes) Have students share their models with the class and explain what each layer is.
