3D Terrain for X-Wing HotAC Ground Assault
prusaprinters
These are easy-to-print 3d-versions of the dense and elevated terrain for the Ground Assault missions of the coop campaign “Heroes of the Aturi Cluster” (for the X-Wing miniature game by FFG/AMG).The goal of these models was to leave the top flat for gameplay purposes. These could be used “bare” or (as I've done) with the printed terrain images on top (I just used a bit of blue putty to hold them in place, this way they can eventually easily be replaced by other images). The dense terrain models are just thin plates of 2mm thickness, but the elevated terrain models have a height/thickness of 25.4mm (1 inch). The bottom of these matches the size of the 2d-print-out, but the top is tapered inwards a bit, to give the sides a more realistic cliff-like look (so the print-out needs to be cut down a little bit to fit).I've also added a thin, “flat” version of the elevated terrain models, in case somebody is interested in that. You can also modify the source Fusion 360 file to adjust the thickness or taper angle of the models, if wanted. Finally, I also included the svg-files of the outlines of the terrain I created from the source pdf-files, in case somebody finds this useful. Before printing: ScalingI scaled these to match the size of the 2d-printed terrain tokens from the Ground Assault “printable-materials.pdf” - which, depending on your 2d-print settings, might actually turn out a different size than you'd expect - so you should double-check beforehand (this is easiest done by measuring one of the pieces with a flat side).Even though the GA manual claims that these are supposed to match the gas clouds from the main HotAC campaign (so one could use them double-sided), I found that mine turned out slightly smaller (even though I used a 100% scale) - possibly due to a difference between European A4 and North-American letter paper sizes. If you want to match the gas clouds, you should scale your 3d print (and possibly the 2d prints) at a factor of 107.8% in the x- and y- direction (leave the z-axis unchanged).Print settingsI printed these using a 0.8mm nozzle for speed, using 5% infill for the elevated pieces (the dense pieces are almost solid, since they are only a few layers thick anyways). That being said, you can of course print these also with a standard 0.4mm nozzle, but it will of course take quite a while longer.I've left all pieces of the same type in the same 3mf file: This way you can find your perfect print settings, and then just activate/deactivate some of the pieces as they fit on your build plate. After printingIf you want to decorate the models with the 2D-print-outs, you'll have to trace and then cut away the outline of top of the elevated pieces. For better immersion (and as suggested in the Ground Assault manual), you could of course add actual tree models and sand etc, and paint the pieces - but part of my goal here was to print-and-(almost)-play. Post a make if you end up doing something fancier with these models!
