I find that grasping new concepts comes more easily when I can visualize them in action. When first learning to read topography maps, I became bogged down by the confusing array of squiggly lines on the page. It wasn't until I grasped the fundamental nature of contour lines that I could instinctively decipher the terrain they depicted. When it was time for me to teach this same class, I knew that to drive home this concept, I needed a physical model to show and pass around. My initial prototype was a hand-carved piece of styrofoam drawn on with a sharpie. It served its purpose at the time but has since begun to deteriorate. With access to the tools and software I have now, I decided to upgrade my creation.
