3D Soccer Ball

Summary I created a 3-D soccer ball by following this video: https://www.youtube.com/watchv=wYmaLSg5244I was not able to print a perfect sphere because I printed the ball in one piece, so I made the bottom flat by using extrude cut. My soccer ball has a height of about 10cm and a diameter of around 11cm. How I Designed This 1. a: On the front plane, create three pentagons (pentagon one- smallest, pentagon two- medium, and pentagon three- largest) and make three of the edges that correspond with each other, vertical to one another. Make the outer two pentagons marked for construction. b: Make pentagon two 50 cm and the outside pentagon 100cm (you can scale it at the end)c: Draw a line from a point on pentagon one to the corresponding point on pentagon two.d: Make the length of the new line drawn, the same length as one of the sides of pentagon one. 2. a: On the top plane, first add a triangle (without the bottom side) for construction with the bottom two points on the edges of the 2nd and 3rd pentagon (select pierce as the relation). b: Add a hexagon to the top point of the now triangle. c: Smart dimension one of the sides to 50cm3. a: Add a plane that starts at the second pentagon from the outside and angles up at the same angle of the longer side of the “triangle” created in step 2. b: Make a hexagon on the plane and then connect the two bottom points of the hexagon to the two closest points on the second pentagon. 4. a: Add a reference axis (in reference geometry) from the center of the hexagon and from pentagon one. b: Then find the reference point by going to reference geometry again and selecting the two axes. The reference point will show up where the two axes would intersect. b: Add a point to the intersection of where the two axes would be. c: Loft pentagon 1 to the point just created. 5. a: Loft from the trapezoid on the front plane to the top point. Deselect merge result before clicking the check mark. b: Loft from the trapezoid on the slanted plane to the top point. Deselect merge result before clicking the check mark. c: Loft the pentagon on the slanted plane to the top point. Deselect merge result before clicking the check mark. 6. a: On the top plane, create an arc from the that starts on axis two, slightly above the line (really pentagons on the front plane) and ends below the top point. b: Smart dimension the R to 100 7. a: Go to surfaces, then revolved surface and select the arc. 8. a: Offset the surface by 2mm. 9. a: Go to “cut with surface” and select the inside part of the bowl. b: Go to “cut with surface” again and this time select the outside part of the bowl. Now the pattern should be inside the bowl, not poking through on either side. 10. a: Right click and hide everything you don’t see in the image above. b: Select circular pattern and select the axis of the right hexagon. c: Change the instances to 6. 11. a: Select circular pattern and under bodies select the trapezoid to the right of the pentagon. b: Change the instances to 5. 12. a: Combine the six trapezoids surrounding the hexagon and the hexagon. b: Combine the 5 trapezoids surrounding the pentagon and the pentagon. 13. a: Fillet the edges of the hexagon and pentagon. 14. a: Select circular pattern and select the axis of the pentagon for the direction. b: Select the hexagon for the features and faces. 15. a: Select move/copy body and select the center pentagon and one hexagon. b: Check the box that says copy. c: Under the copy checkbox, select the axis of one of the hexagon for rotate d: Change the degrees to -120. 16. a: Select circular pattern again and select the axis of the pentagon for the direction. b: Select bodies and select the hexagon that was just created. 17.a: Create a reference plane and select the top plane.b: Select the point at the center of the bowl shape for the reference plane to the level with. c: Select mirror and then for bodies to mirror, select everything. 18. a: Go to move/copy body and select all of the shapes on the top half of the soccer ball. b: Under rotate, select the axis below the ball and change the degrees to 36.c: Make sure to deselect copy. 19. Optional step: Cut the bottom of the soccer ball off slightly so it can print in one piece a: Select cut extrude and make a blind cut down that is 15 cm or whatever you prefer. 20. Optional step #2: Scale the soccer ball so it isn’t life sized.a: Select the entire soccer ball, putting in 0.054 will make the soccer ball around 10 cm.
