A comparison between Skanect, Reconstructme and Kscan3D software, utilizing a Rev1 Kinect sensor for Xbox360... Skanect ultimately failed to impress, its uninstallation process being the main reason. At $140, users are expected to pay extra for more than 5000 polygons. While the UI is underwhelming, it functions smoothly and is incredibly simple to use. ReconstructMe boasts impressive videos and a compelling sales pitch. It seems to perform well and is free. The 3D selfie feature appears intriguing, and I plan on exploring it further in my comparison. However, for my purposes, the capture process was finicky, frequently losing tracking and taking an eternity to recover. Nevertheless, it produced a respectable model with a high polygon count. Kscan3D proved to be a pleasant surprise after overcoming initial installation woes caused by .NET issues. Once up and running, I discovered that it is quite impressive. Running a batch capture of 20 images using Mesh alignment was a breeze, thanks to the countdown tone and shutter sound cues prompting me to rotate the object and exit the scene. The aligning and combining meshes process was engaging and fluid. My only concern was during the export process, when I thought it had hung up, but it ultimately produced a 53mb .stl file. STL files are named accordingly, which is reassuring. Loading them into Thingview should allow for closer inspection without downloading. Although these models may not be suitable for printing, use at your own risk.
