3D Scan of Bearded Maker

thingiverse

Bearded Maker, founder of JMoon Technologies, needed a face cast for his next cosplay project. To avoid the hassle of applying vaseline and alginate, he scanned himself instead of relying on someone's help or scouring the JMoon MakerSpace for necessary materials. To scan his bust, Bearded Maker tried three options: the Kinect v1, the Kinect v2 with 3D Scan capability, and the Intel R200 paired with itSeez3D. The R200 scan yielded the best results, so he exported the data from itSeez3D to .OBJ format and opened it in 3D Builder for verification. After confirming that everything was correct, Bearded Maker exported the file to .STL format for use in FlashPrint. He then edited the design in FlashPrint to isolate the front part of his face, as he didn't need a full head or shoulders model. The file was 3D printed on a #FlashForge Creator Pro at 20% size with 40% infill and 0.1mm layer thickness to ensure a successful print before proceeding with the full-sized model. Time breakdown: scanning took 15 minutes, creating the STL file required 5 minutes, printing the 20% model took 40 minutes, and printing the full-sized model in four colors at 5% infill and 0.1mm layer thickness consumed 22 hours of time.
