I decided to attempt 3D scanning a shell my wife and I discovered on vacation a few years ago. It was the first time I'd ever used a scanner like that. Using David3 software with structured light setup proved pretty effective. To get a clean scan, the shell had to be positioned on a turntable so it could be slowly rotated, allowing every part of it to be scanned accurately. I made no attempt to capture the underside of the shell during this process since the scanner could just infer what that area would look like on its own. On 3/11/13 I continued experimenting with vapor polishing techniques, particularly using acetone fumes to see how well they would work on my previous project. As a result, the surface of the shell received a smoother finish after eight minutes in a jar with acetone vapor heated up to 100 degrees Celsius, where about a tablespoon was present at all times during this time frame. Caution is advised if anyone decides to follow this example – they should take precautions such as wearing gloves and keeping proper ventilation along with a safe workspace.
