3D Printing Industry Awards Trophy 2019
myminifactory
This is my entry for the 3D Printing Industry Awards 2019. This trophy showcases the incredible level of detail and complex geometries that 3D printing can achieve today. What sets this design apart from others? I wanted to create a truly unique piece that highlights the capabilities of 3D printing. The craziest designs that were once unimaginable for manufacturers are now a reality, thanks to advancements in technology. I designed the upper part of the trophy to be printed in SLA, with supports needed for the intricate veronai pattern ball. Once removed, the ball is securely locked in place but can still rotate freely within the body, creating an interesting feature that sets it apart from other designs. Inside the veronai pattern ball lies another complex geometry, resembling a vortex wormhole. This symbolizes the rapid acceleration of 3D printing and manufacturing, which has advanced at an astonishing pace over the past five years. It's as if we've jumped through a wormhole, going from infancy to maturity in a relatively short period. The lower body will be printed in MJF, giving it a nice matte metal composite look with the Protolabs logo encapsulated within. The light bouncing off the matte grey MJF should reflect through the upper trophy part, which will be printed in SLA as one piece. The two bodies can be merged using a thin layer of transparent epoxy glue. In short, my design showcases the mind-bending possibilities of 3D manufacturing. If a thin-walled veronai pattern ball with another complex shape inside that rotates freely doesn't demonstrate the incredible advances of 3D printing, then I'm not sure what will.
