3D Printed Surfboard
cults3d
These are the working files for a 3D Printed surfboard I designed in AKU Shaper and exported as an STL. The STL was then imported into Meshmixer and the surfboard model was cut apart into smaller pieces for printing, alignment holes were added and a spot for a leash and vent plug. I have included the original working files and the exported files from Meshmixer with the pieces hollowed out at 0.75 mm wall thickness (mostly, some were printed thicker). Some pieces will have to print with "bridging" and the alignment holes aren't perfect but they are good enough, mostly some pieces near the rail. After printing the model was glued together using Weld-On 16 and then fiberglassed (this is a must if you want it to be water tight and surfable). This would make a cool wall hanger or display. The fins were 3d printed as well but I couldn't find the link to the ones I printed I found them on Thingiverse. I didn't want to include the files unless I had permission. For an in depth look at how I created it check out an Instructables I created and I posted a youtube video about it as well. https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-3D-Print-a-Surfboard/ Total Weight before fiberglassing: 6.90 lbs (3.1 kg) Final Weight after fiberglassing: 13.9 lbs (6.3 kg) Total Time Printing: 218.47 Hours or over 9 full days of printing. Total Cost to Print in Electricity: $5.24 (@ 2.4 cents per hour) Total Cost of 3D Filament: $150 95 Individual Pieces and a lot of alignment pins. Dimensions of the surfboard: 6'4" x 20" x 2 5/8" Volume of the board: 37 litres Update 2019-05-22: The beaches have reopened and I got out to at least test the board, haven't had it in good surf yet and the water temp was 4 C, so not exactly tropical. Regardless I can report that this board floats fine, paddles well and my glassing job held up with no de-laminations. The waves were a bit mushy and it was hard to get any good rides with it yet, The board is best suited to clean powerful waves, due to the thinness. So this is a totally viable way to make a surfboard, who would have thought!
