"3D Printed Mantel Style Clock" is a cutting-edge analog clock that combines the elegance of "mantel clock" design with the modernity of "bakelite radio" styling. This innovative timepiece features electronic chimes, hourly synchronization with NTP time servers over WiFi, and an optional battery backup system. Check out this video to see the clock in action: [insert link]. The clock's internal mechanism is powered by an Adafruit Feather ESP32, which takes care of time keeping, while a separate module handles audio functions. The twin 1.5 inch speakers are driven by an Adafruit Feather Music Maker, and a stepper motor controlled by a dedicated controller displays the hours and minutes on an analog dial. The clock's software is designed to utilize two CPU cores in the ESP32. Core 1 handles setup and loop functions, while core 0 takes care of tasks like homing, updating clock hands, mp3 startup, and playback. A 1Hz interrupt ensures that timekeeping and display updates occur simultaneously with audio. To maintain accuracy, the clock synchronizes once per hour with an NTP server. If power is lost, the optional battery backup keeps the clock running for short periods. When WiFi becomes available again, the clock returns to its correct time. The distinctive chimes were inspired by an antique clock inherited from my wife's father after his passing. I recreated the mechanical sounds as mp3 files on a micro SD card inserted into the music maker. Based on the time of day, the clock software transfers one of these files to the music maker via an ESP32 SPI bus. You can load any mp3 file you like onto the micro SD card for use as chimes. The daylight savings time feature is optional and can be set up at compile time. When enabled, the clock will adjust its time accordingly on specific dates and times. As always, I may have missed a few files or made some mistakes, so please don't hesitate to point them out if you notice anything amiss. Designed using Autodesk Fusion 360 and sliced with Cura 3.5.1, this clock was printed in PLA on an Ultimaker 2+ Extended and an Ultimaker 3 Extended.
