3D printing has long deemed to be the future and is steadily moving further to revolutionize various industries, including the fashion industry. Today, accessories, parts of clothes and even entire garments are being printed in 3D. However, one must not forget the advantages of the individual textiles such as skin friendliness, breathability and heat insulation. That's why I decided to combine the conventional textile surface with the 3D printing process and turn it into so-called “Smart Clothes” by adding LED lighting for aesthetics. The objective is to introduce 3D printing to traditional printing methods in the fashion industry, such as heat transfer or screen printing, with the overall goal to fully replace them one day. As part of my clothing technology studies I successfully ran various tests confirming that an adhesion between the textile surface and the print can be achieved by using the specific parameters. The provided example shows a logo with a height of 6mm printed on a knitted fabric including eleven LEDs. My approach to this exercise was to first lay the scientific foundation based on which creative possibilities are virtually endless. In my example the only limitation which needs to be considered is the height of the LEDs.
