3D Penny-Powered Pixel Art Blocks - Video Game Art

Inspired by the vibrant woodblock pixel art of Etsy user BodegaCatCo and others, I designed some 3D-printable plastic blocks that connect seamlessly together using American pennies. Create stunning flat wall art, such as the iconic Stardew Valley chicken featured in my pictures, or build three-dimensional masterpieces by stacking blocks on top of each other. These blocks measure precisely 23.8mm / 0.94 inches cubed. Steps: 1. Discover a pixel art drawing of your favorite video game character. A great resource is pixilart.com. 2. Print two test blocks using "PennyPixelBlockArtStandard.stl." You may need to print several tests to achieve the perfect penny grip, and it's crucial that you use Cura's setting "horizontal expansion" to fine-tune the penny grip (or another slicer's equivalent). 3. Plan out the number of blocks and their colors. You can print all in one color of plastic and then paint, or create a colorful masterpiece by printing with various colors of plastic. If you're making 2D art and don't mind seeing the penny holes on the exposed sides, "PennyPixelBlockArtStandard.stl" is sufficient. For solid sides, use several .STLs. To hang your art on a wall, print two of "PennyPixelBlockArtHanger.stl" and position them accordingly. 4. Print and connect. I use a small amount of Elmer's Glue in the penny slots to secure a solid connection. Once complete, I tape the back side to ensure stability. The directional triangles on the backside of the blocks facilitate polarity maintenance. I highly recommend keeping all triangles facing the same direction. This will help if your printer prints the block length slightly different than block width. You won't always be able to maintain the same direction with blocks having exposed faces, but it shouldn't matter too much. Cat for scale. ;-)
