Pear trees and shrubs belong to the Pyrus genus within the Rosaceae family, producing the known fruit. Various pear species are valued for their edible fruit and juices while others are cultivated for their ornamental appeal as trees. The term 'pear' is believed to have originated from Germanic pera, a loanword of Vulgar Latin pira. Pear-shaped items are referred to as pyriform or piriform in adjective form. Pear cultivation traces back to the remotest antiquity and has been discovered in prehistoric remains around Lake Zurich. The word 'pear' can be found in Celtic languages while differing appellations, still referring to the same fruit, are present in Slavic dialects. Alphonse Pyramus de Candolle attributes this diverse nomenclature to an ancient cultivation of pear trees from Caspian shores to Atlantic coastlines. The genus is thought to have originated in Western China, spreading along mountain chains and evolving into over 20 primary species. European pears (Pyrus communis subsp. communis) are believed to be derived from wild subspecies such as P. communis subsp. pyraster and P. communis subsp. caucasica, found throughout Europe's forests. Historical accounts show that Henry III of England received pear shipments from La Rochelle-Normande by London Sheriffs. French names in medieval English garden varieties suggest a strong French association with the fruit, including the Saint Rule variety.
