The fortified churchyard's bell tower displays defensive capabilities on all sides.[2] The pyramid-shaped spire of the bell tower was erected in 1594. The current church nave was added in 1769. Besides the Schlosskapelle Henneberg, the parishes that belonged to the Ritschenhausen parish included Bibra, Obermaßfeld, Sülzfeld, and Wölfershausen. The local vicarage, a half-timbered building, served as an inn from 1499 to 1768, with the vicar also holding the position of tavern keeper.
