The Mil Mi-24 is a massive helicopter gunship, attack helicopter and low-capacity troop transport that accommodates eight passengers. Produced by the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, it has been operated since 1972 by the Soviet Air Force and its successors in conjunction with forty-eight other nations. In NATO circles, export versions like the Mi-25 and Mi-35 are distinguished as "Hind D" and "Hind E". Soviet pilots referred to the Mi-24 as a "flying tank," a term historically associated with the renowned World War II Soviet Il-2 Shturmovik armored ground attack aircraft.
