Here are three printable components for use in conjunction with a rod: First is a simplified insert for 3D print that diminishes the spool hole to a mere 9mm diameter while also ensuring smoother filament rotation on an 8mm rod. This spool holder has a built-in 8mm rod, but be aware that 3D printed spools tend to oscillate excessively when placed upon it and consequently drag the filament along. This spool insert is made available by way of open source Onshape software at https://cad.onshape.com/documents/9ac2cdd4e55f44d7ad4cd93a/w/9ac21aee6d24417b94d4bc35/e/ad107eb49641475d87aefce3. The Instructions section: Print out two units of this spool insert. The design has been rigorously tested to snugly fit inside 30mm filament spools from Hatchbox, and I'm happy to include STLs for various spool sizes based on your feedback. If you're in possession of a different-sized spool opening, don't hesitate to share the specs with me so I can tailor future STLs accordingly.
