A 3D Model of the De'VIA symbol from the De'VIA Curriculum Development Team De'VIA, short for Deaf View/ Image Art, is a vibrant genre of visual art that boldly represents the Deaf experience and rich Deaf culture. Although De'VIA works have been created over centuries, the term was first coined and recognized as an art genre in 1989.[1] That same year, a dynamic group of nine Deaf artists converged at Gallaudet University just before the Deaf Way arts festival got underway there. Led by Betty G. Miller, affectionately known as the Mother of De'VIA,[2], and Paul Johnston, these pioneering artists crafted a bold manifesto outlining what De'VIA is all about and what it encompasses.[3] Since its official designation as a genre, De'VIA has played a pivotal role in introducing the Deaf experience to the artistic world and providing a fresh platform for the Deaf community.[4]
