380-400R640-650 Block, Outlined

Archaeologists uncovered a 380-400R640-650 block at the top of subsoil with pit and posthole edges clearly outlined. Located at the Wall site (31Or11) in Orange County, North Carolina, this discovery was made during an archaeological excavation undertaken by the Research Laboratories of Archaeology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2015. Dating back to the Late Woodland period (AD 1500-1600), this excavation revealed six refuse-filled pits and postholes representing parts of two defensive palisades on the northeast edge of the Wall site. The dimensions of the pit and posthole edges were 20.00 ft (6.10 m) in length, north-south, and 10.00 ft (3.05 m) in width, east-west, with a maximum depth of 1.03 ft (0.31 m).
