The .38 Smith & Wesson Special, commonly referred to as the .38 Special, is a rimmed cartridge designed by Smith & Wesson for use in revolvers. Although some semi-automatic pistols and carbines also utilize this round, it's most typically employed in revolvers. As the standard service cartridge of U.S. police departments from the 1920s through the 1990s, the .38 Special has played a significant role in law enforcement history. Additionally, soldiers during World War I often used sidearm cartridges of this type. In other regions, it's known as 9×29.5mmR or 9.1×29mmR due to its metric designation.
