One of two rare leather hats is part of the impressive Stirling Castle collection. The Stirling Castle is a historically significant shipwreck site located on the Goodwin Sands in Kent, where it remains protected today. This treasured vessel sank during the devastating Great Storm of 1703, leaving behind a fascinating legacy for archaeologists to explore. The Isle of Thanet Archaeological Society proudly owns this extraordinary collection, which is carefully preserved and displayed at three prominent museums: Ramsgate Maritime Museum, Hastings Shipwreck Museum, and Greenwich Maritime Museum. One hat (accession number 366) is currently on display in Ramsgate, while the other (accession number L1_1110) can be seen in Hastings. Together with some remarkable leather shoe remains, both hats form a crucial part of the HE project 7241: “Unraveling the Secrets of Two Leather Hats and Shoe Remains from Stirling Castle, a Protected Shipwreck Site”.
