35mm to 120/220 film adaptor kit for Hasselblad and other roll film cameras

If you have a camera capable of taking 220 roll film you can use it to expose a full roll of 35mm film using the adaptors in this print. I've tried other 3D-printed adaptors but none worked in my Hasselblad A24 magazines, which is why I designed these. They should fit any 220 camera (but no guarantees!) Although they will fit a 120 camera you may not be able to use the full length of 35mm film, depending on your camera. The image you'll get from a 6x6 camera is 56mm x 24mm and in a Hasselblad this is vertical - the black & white image shows this aspect ratio (scanned from Rollei Retro 80S film).

Film leader

In addition to the printed parts you will need a 450mm length of scrap film and some pressure sensitive tape. The length of scrap film is to account for the initial wind-on of film (in a roll film camera this is a paper leader but if you don't put a leader at the start of the 35mm film you will only get about 16 shots and a third of the film will be wasted. With a leader you'll get 24 exposures on the full length of film). The pressure sensitive tape is for joining the leader to the film. You need to mark a line on the leader 220mm from where it joins the film. This is the amount of leader you have to wind back into the cassette before loading the camera, the rest you wind on to the take-up spool.

Print settings

I used PIPG filament for my prints but it should work with PETG or PLA. I've shown some red components just so that they show up in the photos but black filament would be preferable to minimise any stray reflections in the camera. I use 100% infill on the prongs that engage the 35mm spool and 40% infill on the body of these two components. The four 120-spool spacers can have 25% infill. A print of the whole kit takes just under 2 hours on a MK3S.

Use

The four half-round spacers should be super-glued to a spare 120 spool. The two cassette spacers will only work at their correct end of the 35mm film spool.

Film processing

Once you've exposed the film remember not to open the camera/magazine until it's in the darkroom/darkbag and ready to load into the processing tank. And remember to detach the leader for re-use - don't wind it into the processing tank.

Further information

You can read a fuller description on my blog at mraggett.wordpress.com
