35mm Negative Holder for Camera Scanning
thingiverse
A simple yet effective DIY solution for scanning negatives with a DSLR involves creating a custom negative holder. The basic design features two compartments - one larger than the other - where each piece of equipment serves its purpose efficiently. Since it's crucial to hit the whole negative, the side opposite from the flash is constructed differently. It's designed in such a way that even exposure results throughout. Using transparent tape for protection may help prevent scratching, although I have experimented with felt materials and discovered they offer better performance while slightly modifying my holder might improve its overall design quality. The use of two paper sheets between the flash unit and negative greatly helps reduce flare due to the flash bouncing back towards it. Overall, using a DSLR yields excellent results by comparing it against any other flatbed scanner - even those designed specifically for such a purpose fail to impress compared to these photos captured on digital media!
