357 Magnum (9x33 R) mm: A powerful American turret cartridge born from Smith & Wesson's innovative spirit in 1934. During America's dry law era, organized crime reached an all-time high, with gangsters wielding automatic weapons and sleek cars often equipped with intimidating features. To take down such formidable foes, the standard police revolver's .38 Special cartridge proved woefully inadequate. In response, Smith & Wesson and Winchester joined forces to boost the police cartridge's potency without altering the revered design of the Model 10 revolver. The solution lay in amplifying the powder charge within the .38 Special, coupled with a modest increase in liner thickness – about 10% more – all while maintaining the same caliber. This potent new cartridge earned the name .357 Magnum.
