The 357 Magnum (9x33 R) mm is an influential American turret cartridge with high power, developed by Smith & Wesson in 1 934. Due to the rise of organized crime during the US dry law era, the .38 Special police revolver cartridge was deemed insufficiently powerful against armed criminals wielding automatic weapons and powerful cars. To address this, Smith & Wesson collaborated with Winchester to increase the capacity of the police cartridge without altering the design of the Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolver significantly. They achieved this by increasing the powder charge in the .38 Special cartridge and thickening the liner by approximately 10% without changing the caliber. This innovative cartridge was named the .357 Magnum.
