35 East Wacker, also known as the Jewelers' Building, is a 40-story 159m historic building in Chicago's Loop community area of Illinois, USA. Located at the intersections of Wabash Avenue, it faces the Chicago River. Built from 1925 to 1927 by Joachim G. Giaver and Frederick P. Dinkelberg, it was once considered the world's tallest building outside New York City. Formerly Pure Oil Building and North American Life Insurance Building, 35 East Wacker was listed in 1978 as a contributing property to the Michigan-Wacker Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, designated a Chicago Landmark on February 9, 1994. For its first 14 years, parking occupied lower floors with a car lift facilitating safe transfers for jewelry merchants. The French-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago is a current tenant, and architect Helmut Jahn's showroom is atop the building inside the dome, originally a restaurant. Renovation is underway, maintaining the facade but converting interiors into modern configuration. Both the American Institute of Architects' Chicago chapter and the City of Chicago have recognized this project with awards.
