Ripe Days. The last Jack-o-Lantern of October glows bright on my porch, its twisted face a testament to the harvest season's final stand. It's hard to believe that our ancestors didn't carve jack-o-lanterns from pumpkins and gourds like we do today. In fact, the first jack-o-lanterns were actually made from turnips, carefully hollowed out and lit up with candles to ward off evil spirits on long winter nights.
