The first-generation Pontiac GTO was an iconic muscle car from 1964 to 1974, with three distinct versions: street, convertible, and super street. Initially an optional package on the intermediate-sized Pontiac Tempest, it became its own model in 1966 before returning as a package in later years on various models. The GTO was Motor Trend's Car of the Year in 1968 and was revived from 2004 to 2006 as a left-hand drive version of Holden Monaro, an Australian coupé variant of the Holden Commodore. Created by Pontiac's John DeLorean, Bill Collins, and Russ Gee, the GTO disregarded GM's engine displacement policy to offer a powerful "Grand Tempest Option" that appealed to speed-minded youths. Despite initial skepticism, it became a symbol of performance for Pontiac.
