3 inch diameter High Power Rocket Avionics Bay

thingiverse

This is a custom avionics bay designed specifically for rockets with a minimum diameter of three inches. Space limitations in smaller rockets often make it difficult to accommodate multiple altimeters and batteries along with their respective connectors and ejection charges. This bay, however, is optimized for use with Featherweight Raven and PerfectFlite Stratologger altimeters that run on 9V batteries stored in a dedicated compartment. The compartments and altimeters are secured using brass threaded inserts sourced from McMaster-Carr. The avionics bay itself is constructed by threading three 10-24 allthreads together, each end featuring thread connectors for added stability. Hex head screws with sufficient size to prevent ejection charge blowthrough are used to attach the bulkhead to the internal components of the AV bay, also equipped with ejection connectors. The bulkhead includes a 3D printed block to serve as terminal blocks, reducing space requirements and eliminating bulky screw-down connectors. This avionics bay has been successfully deployed on my rocket (Sixieme) at BALLS 2016, withstanding a 19G launch that reached an altitude of 23,000 feet before recovery. The maximum speed achieved during the flight was 1.8 mach. The included drill guide ensures precise alignment for both the bay and ejection block, facilitating smooth integration into the rocket's structure. For attaching body tubes to the AV bay, guides on an inner ring retain nuts for outside screws, ensuring a secure fit. Print Settings: Printer: Flashforge Creator Pro Rafts: No Supports: Yes Resolution: 0.2 mm Infill: 30% for added strength Notes: Supports are highly recommended to maintain structural integrity, particularly around the battery bay and mounting cutouts. While printing without supports is possible, it may compromise the structural stability of the avionics bay.
