Its morphology is varied, with abundant reniform, fibroradial, compact, hojosas, and stalactitic masses. It's a common weathering product of numerous iron minerals in oxygenated environments. As such, it's an ordinary component of soils, being particularly concentrated in laterites. However, it also appears as primary precipitate in hydrothermal, marine, and swampy environments after the oxidation of waters containing Fe2+. It can be associated with lepidocrocite, hematite, pyrite, siderite, pirolusite, and manganosite.
