3-cylinder engines are smaller and lighter, so they basically induce a better efficiency of the car by making it lighter, with of course less material needed for its manufacture (more virtuous for the environment).Reduced consumption is obtained because the reduction of the cylinders also reduces the friction surface (segments against the cylinder wall), because the latter takes a little energy which is lost in heat (therefore less heat loss). Reducing the friction surface also reduces wear, so here we compensate a bit for the reduction in displacement (there is a lot of concern about the reliability of small engines) compared to the generally larger 4-cylinder engines (logic dictates that if we go to 3 cylinders we also try to reduce the displacement at the same time). At the admission level it's the same thing, the less displacement volume I have, the less pumping losses I have.
