The statue is carved into solid limestone bedrock, depicting a reclining sphinx - a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. Although the name "sphinx" was given to it by Westerners due to its resemblance to the Greek creature, its original name remains unknown. Over time, it's been identified as a solar deity and as "The Terrifying One" or literally "Father of Dread" in Arabic. Facing directly from West to East, this incredible monument stands proudly on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. Measuring 73 meters (240 feet) long from paw to tail, 20 meters (66 feet) high from base to head, and 19 meters (62 feet) wide at its rear haunches, it's an awe-inspiring sight!
