The 1:200 scale model of the 2S1 SP gun by dr_fil is exceptional, perfectly suited for its intended use. However, when scaled up to 1:76, it fails to meet expectations, as one would reasonably anticipate. Consequently, I felt compelled to explore alternative approaches that could significantly enhance its value. Since I have recently transitioned into a state of semi-retirement, I now find myself with the time and opportunity to engage in model creation, and this particular project has been underway for quite some time. This design draws inspiration from a surface model available within the SketchUp library, courtesy of Jorge Balas, whose contribution I am grateful for. Through modifying and adjusting the model within Sketchup (a process facilitated by AutoCAD's capabilities) and 3D Builder (thanks to Microsoft), I successfully addressed several critical shortcomings, including the implementation of support structures for the wheels and a more accurate representation of their translation. To further optimize the printing process, I opted to separate the turret and hull vertically. This decision allowed me to take advantage of printers' higher resolution in certain directions and reduce the number of necessary supports. However, I would appreciate feedback on this approach, as it is still an area of uncertainty for me. To facilitate alignment during assembly, I added dowels and corresponding holes; yet, I am unsure if these features are truly indispensable. The final step involved splitting the hull into three sections in order to minimize support structures and potentially reduce print time. While my goal was to achieve this outcome, it remains unclear whether I have been successful in doing so. The turret now boasts a separate gun barrel that can be elevated, marking an experimental development. It's worth noting that this model appears somewhat lacking in detail outside of the suspension system. This is largely due to the fact that real-world photographs of the vehicle reveal an almost bare external appearance. My hope is that this model will prove appealing to modern period modellers and wargamers, offering a fresh perspective on this subject matter.
