Sterling Shaner McGill University Department of Mechanical Engineering 23 April 2018 A dial calliper is crafted with a lead screw pitch of 2 millimeters per revolution in mind. Consequently, one half-turn corresponds to exactly one millimeter. Minor markers are placed every two millimeters and major markers every ten millimeters. The platforms of the jaws feature a calibration pad of 0.15 millimeters. This allows for easy finishing and calibration with sandpaper. Experience has shown that threads require only a tolerance of 0.2 millimeters to mesh and grind into shape easily, requiring minimal backlash. This caliper is not intended for extremely precise measurements but rather for replicating purposes. It is sufficient for measuring objects comfortably to 0.5 millimeters with ease. Higher resolution is anticipated.
